This year’s Summer Academy had a great start with 94 incoming high school freshman through seniors in attendance. In the morning, students explored exciting career paths at various locations, such as the Tribal Advocacy Department at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Justice Center and the City of Scottsdale Fire Department and Police Station. They toured a variety of educational institutions including A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Grand Canyon University’s School of Hospitality and Scottsdale Community College School of Culinary Arts, Film, Sports Health and Nursing, and learned about various degree programs.
The students participated in interactive activities such as NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration Engineers – who construct and test heat shields to withstand 3000 degrees (F), the temperature similar to shuttle reentry from space when visiting the Challenger Space Center. After lunch, students had the opportunity to attend a college course at Phoenix College, choosing from Creating College Success (CPD 115), Healthy Relationships & Time Management (CPD 195AB) or Storytelling Circle (STO 291AA). A special thank you to all the parents/guardians for enrolling your students into our program! We hope to see everyone again next year, and we are continuing to accept applications throughout the year for our College and Career Readiness Program.
