2017 Spring Diné Language Classes Now Available

Starting January 23, 2017 through May 13, 2017

Classes are FREE to Diné people on a first come first served basis. Non-Navajos will be allowed to register for a class upon availability with a fee of $150.

Classes are not accredited and do not qualify for any scholarship requirements.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DINÉ BIZAAD CLASS

Location: Phoenix Indian Center

Class will meet every Tuesday, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am beginning January 24 through May 9, 2017.

This class is for children who are 4 years and younger, it focuses on early childhood Diné language development using basic sight words. Parents are encouraged to participate with their child(ren).

DINÉ LANGUAGE CLASS

Location: Connolly Middle School
2002 E Concorda Drive, Room 403

Class will meet every Tuesday from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm beginning February 7 through May 9, 2017.

This class is open to all ages as an introduction to simple conversation using basic sight words, the date, clan activities and seasonal stories. Students and families will engage in interactive activities to enhance conversational skills.

DINÉ CULTURE CLASS

Location: Mesa Public School Student Services Center
1025 N. Country Club Drive, Grand Canyon Room

Class will meet every Thursday from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
February 9 –  through May 11, 2017.

This is a class open to all ages and will focus on Diné culture using Diné language. Students will learn about Self Identity using personal clan introduction through Oral History.

DINÉ WEAVING CLASS

Location: Phoenix Indian Center
4520 N Central Ave., 2nd Floor

Class I will meet every Wednesday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm beginning January 25 through May 10, 2017.

Instructor: Cheryl Mizell

Class II will meet every Saturday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm beginning January 28 through May 13, 2017.

Instructor: Velma Craig

The classes are recommended for ages 10 and up with a parent chaperone. This will be an introduction to Diné Weaving. Classes will focus on learning how to set up the loom, the significance of the loom, and learning basic designs and patterns.

Weaving loom may be purchased if needed. Weaving tools will be made available for purchase.

DINÉ SINGING CLASS (Diné Urban Voices)

Location: Phoenix Indian Center
4520 N Central Ave., 2nd Floor
Phoenix AZ 85012

This class is open to all ages and will meet every Saturday from 10:00 am to 11:30 am beginning January 28 through May 13, 2017.

This class will focus on social songs of the Diné people, songs pertaining to children’s lullabies and holiday songs will also be learned.

This class also gets invitations to sing at local events throughout the Phoenix Valley.
